Council on Academic Freedom

Formed in October, 2024, the MIT Council on Academic Freedom (MITCAF) is a faculty organization devoted to promoting and defending freedom of expression and academic freedom at the Institute. MITCAF is independent from MIT’s administration, and membership is open to any faculty member (including lecturers, instructors, and emeriti) who supports its mission.


The mission of MITCAF is to advocate for three primary principles that were stated in MIT's Statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom.

  3. Free Expression & Civil Discourse


The MIT Free Speech Alliance welcomes the formation of the MIT Council on Academic Freedom. The faculty of the Institute are the motive force behind its research, education, and scholarship missions. the faculty are the primary advocates and defenders of the Institute's values, including those stated in the MITCAF charter. MFSA is committed to working with MITCAF and the rest of the MIT faculty to restore MIT's historic culture of freedom of expression, viewpoint diversity, and academic freedom.
